  1. Get Your Hands On Agriya’s Latest Products

    Peter on January 30th, 2011

Do you consider yourself to be at the bleeding edge of Internet trends? Are you able to capitalize on new ideas to build profitable businesses? Do you want to get access to the latest tools, platforms and solutions well before the competition?

If you can answer Yes to these questions then you’ll probably be very interested to hear what we’ve got to tell you.

The fact of the matter is that we are launching more and more platforms and products but are being held back by number of resources available. If we had it our way we’d be launching new products every month, but we need a whole team of people just to maintain and update our current line up of solutions, which means we can’t invest as much time as we’d like in R&D and testing and bug fixing.

This is where you can step in. We are interested in working with people that want to be first to the market in the latest web trends, often setting up a site and going ‘live’ months before any other similar solution is available on the market. This is a true partnership where we provide the technical backup and you help us by offering advice, suggestions, features, feedback, bug reports, comments, questions and more.

You will get completely free access to all the scripts that are in our incubation development teams, test the hell out of them and shape and guide the future development – go ahead, be selfish, guide the product development in a way that suits your own needs, we’ll back you up with a highly trained team of developers…and yep, it’s all for free!

So who is the ideal person for this?

    • You want to access Agriya’s products and use them WAY before they are launched to the public
    • You have the time to provide feedback and suggestions
    • You understand that the software is pre-Alpha and probably riddled with bugs which need to be reported
    • You love systemizing and documenting processes
    • You want to be able to shape the future development
    • You want to be able to access a team of developers to do your work for FREE
    • You are fine with Agriya promoting and showcasing your site to our customers

We don’t want tyre kickers, we want people who are serious about building an online business and are able to put in the time and effort to help us develop the best products on the market. In return you get to launch your site well before any one else, you don’t have to pay us a dime and you can help ensure that Agriya develops the products in a way that suits you and the market.

To get started, comment on this blog post, get in touch with us on the contact page or give us a call on the number below. Let us know why you are interested and what you can bring to the table.

11th March Update: Wow! We have been taken completely by surprise by the number of people that have contacted us about this beta tester program. Infact the response has been so great that we are taking a step back and thinking about how we can make use of all the people that want to get involved. We have some exciting ideas on the drawing board but need to plan them out and think how to implement them first.

We have begun contacting everyone who asked about the beta tester program, we’ve asked for your location and any languages that you know about from English so that we can build bigger, better and more localized versions of our products. If you didn’t get an email, please let us know.

  1. PayPal Adaptive Payments – An Open Letter To PayPal

    Peter on January 16th, 2011

    Dear PayPal,

As one of your long time users and close followers of developments on your x.com developer website we are finding ourselves getting quite frustrated with the way you appear to be treating some of our customers. Most of this mistreatment seems to stem from a lack of understanding of who Agriya are and what they do.

There has been talk and discussion that since Agriya markets the products as ‘clones’ then it must be copying some aspect of the other site. The word ‘clone’ is used simply as an SEO and marketing term since that’s what people are searching for, and as a business we must go where the market is. It’s certainly not our choice to use the word ‘clone’, but that’s the quickest and easiest way to get the message across to a potential customer what our product does. We actually call our products as platforms and encourage customization to make each website unique, so the customer purchases a base and then makes it work the way they want it.

The mistreatment of our customers is typified by a recent case where we integrated the excellent PayPal adaptive payments in to a website for a client. The client has been doing business with PayPal for a number of years and the flexibility that PayPal Adaptive Payments provides makes it a game changer amongst online payment processors. However for the last month the client has been unable to launch his site. Why? Because the staff at PayPal refuse to approve his application based on some misguided belief that the code has been taken from elsewhere.

This lack of understanding about what Agriya does and provides has caused problems for our other clients when you froze the accounts of dozens of people who ran fixed price job portals when you thought they had used the code or infringed the copyright of a major player within the market. Our customers create websites that cater to this market, much like Youtube, Dailymotion and Vimeo cater to the video sharing market – and you wouldn’t say either of these sites are infringing on the copyright of the other, would you? If you can say no to this question why would you have one rule for large sites and another rule for small startups where the owners are trying to earn a living?

As we mentioned earlier, we love the stuff we can now do with PayPal Adaptive Payments and we want to roll it out to promote this service to all our customers, but when you make it difficult for our customers to use your system we are less inclined to promote this excellent service.

Agriya is a large 10 year old company with over 200 developers. We have built over 2,000 web applications and have sold in the region of 20,000 products – most of which have some form of PayPal payment gateway integrated. We would love to be able to promote PayPal Adaptive Payments to all of these customers and drive business your way, but when you are causing so many problems to our clients who are trialling the new payment methods then it does make us wonder whether it’s worth the effort of working and innovating with PayPal’s systems in the future.

So far Agriya has invested a lot of time and effort researching how we can bring more payment features to our platforms and client projects. Some of our achievements include:

    • One of the early adopters of adaptive payment and also promoting it to customers
    • Promoting PayPal’s preauth concept as “PayPal Connect” (till date noone seem to do so, unless PayPal confirm otherwise)
    • Escalated PayPal issues or circumvented through hacks
      • for example, PayPal mass pay doesn’t have option to override IPN
      • Adaptive payment’s App ID could be developer based instead of every installation / instance based
      • Adaptive payment: Sender can’t be set to pay fee with preauth
      • Adaptive payment: Marketplace site can’t be act as a primary receiver in delayed chained payments due to chargeback possibility
      • Adaptive payment: Marketplace site can’t be set as secondary receiver in delayed chained payments as may require API access to refund to another primary receiver.

When it comes to your PayPal Adaptive Payments and x.com development community it’s going to be the developers and progressive merchants that make it a success, but when you make it so difficult you are only hindering your own growth in this area. Agriya can quite easily recommend alternative merchants such as Authorize.net, PayPoint or Amazon’s new FPS, all of which compete with PayPal in terms of flexibility and features.

To conclude this open letter, we’d like to say that we want to keep working with and promoting PayPal Adaptive Payments, but this will not be possible unless the relationship is reciprocated and innovative apps developed for our customers are approved by your staff. We even want to go further and be able to help with things like the simplification of the adaptive payment process since we know it so well, assisting with creating a better API focused on the online marketplace industry where payments are sent between users with the site admin acting as a middle man and creating free sample scripts and wizards for other developers to get involved with PayPal Adaptive Payments.

We hope that you listen and take on board the information presented in this letter and can work to improve the knowledge and understanding of Agriya’s business model and make it easier for our clients to take advantage of the fantastic payment system you are developing.

    Yours sincerely,

    Agriya Custom Projects Team
    FP Platform Development Team
    GroupDeal Development Team
    PeeweePay Development Team

PS. You have been telling some of our clients that your team are in touch with Agriya. This is not the case as we haven’t heard anything from any representative of PayPal, but we are very eager to talk and discuss any issues you might have so we can put your mind to rest as to what it is we do.

20th January Update: PayPal have been in touch with us regarding this letter and confirmed that the issue they have is with the use of the word ‘clone’. Their legal department has a very different definition of the word when compared to how we use it within the web development industry. We’ll keep you posted on any updates.

4th February Update: Last night Agriya had a very successful conference call with the head of the PayPal Adaptive Payments team and the PayPal legal department. They have explained that they are being very cautious over the word ‘clone’ because what ever they decide now will set a precedent on how they will operate in the future. Agriya have been asked to sign a legal indemnity document confirming that all the code is custom developed and not copied from any other site that it ‘clones’. Agriya will have to stand by this legally binding document in a court of law so we must be very sure that all the coding belongs to Agriya or uses licensed technology (such as one of the various Open Source licenses).

9th February Update: Agriya have signed the legal indemnity document requested by PayPal. It’s been returned to PayPal and the manager for the PayPal Adaptive Payments department has requested that Agriya customers add a comment in their application that they are using an Agriya product.

  1. Agriya Redecorates The Office For Pongal 2011

    Peter on January 16th, 2011

If you know anything about India you will know that their is a rich and diverse culture throughout the whole country. It’s often called a sub-continent because customs and traditions in the North are completely different to those in the South.

Agriya is based in the city of Chennai (which used to be called Madras until the late 90′s) which is in the state of Tamil Nadu (which literally translates to “land of Tamils”). The Tamil language and culture is one of the oldest in the world, something they are very proud of.

One of the traditions is called Pongal, which celebrates the Tamil New Year. We’re sure you know that the Chinese have their own New Year at a different time to the Western world and the Tamil New Year is the same – they have their own calendar which is thousands of years old (far older than the Gregorian calendar that everyone uses) and so New Year comes at a different time to Western New
    Year.

    Phew. Did you get that?

Part of the celebrations include decorating the home, creating floral patterns on the floor (called Kolam) out of dyed sea salt and cooking up some Pongal which is very sticky, very sweet and very yummy rice. It’s not for people on a diet though because with all the sugar and carbs you’ll spend the next three months at a gym trying to shift the calories!

Now most of our 200 strong staff come from towns and villages that are hundreds of miles away and take 12 hours to reach, so to create a home away from home feeling in the office our boss decided that everyone needed to take part and redecorate the place.

As part of the events, everyone was requested to come in wearing traditional South Indian clothes, which meant beautiful sarees for the ladies and cotton dhoti’s for the men. The office ladies then created the floral Kolam patterns on each floor and the men…well they hung around and didn’t do that much as usual!

There was also a grand challenge to see who could make the best Pongal. We took four experienced cooks – well, men that are married and have children, and four new cooks (some of the younger ladies) and provided all the ingredients.

The two pots were placed on a table and people were invited to try each one to judge who had made the best Pongal. Despite the years of experience between the men, the Pongal cooked up by the ladies was judged to have the best taste. There was some controversy surrounding the competition when the men were caught red handed swapping the pots of food around!

  1. Agriya Launches Nabit – A Full Yoink Clone

    Peter on January 2nd, 2011

With the new age of austerity affecting many of us and environmental awareness at the forefront of our minds, Nabit is the perfect platform to combine the two biggest issues affecting our world today.

In a nutshell, you can think of this Yoink clone software as an eBay for freebies. Just like on eBay you can list your unwanted items, just like on eBay people can get your items but the biggest difference is that you are giving away your items for free, essentially recycling them and minimizing the environmental impact.

But the environmental issues don’t just stop there, the Nabit script can automatically detect the exact location of your visitor and only displays items that are located near to them. In this way there are no postage and packaging fees and goods are not sent all over the country. Instead the giver and taker can arrange a time to meet up and collect the item.

Of course, if the person can’t find what they are looking for in their area then they can use the map to zoom out and expand their search radius.

Global Stats To Build A Community

Global Stats To Build A Community

For a user to ‘nab’ an item, they simply need to be the first to claim it. Once an item has been claimed it is no longer available unless the taker decides they no longer want it or can’t arrange to pick it up. In that case the giver can simply relist the item at the click of a button.

    Community Software

To build a sense of community, the Nabit platform has a full stats page that shows users who is the most generous person on the site along with who is the most generous from your local area. If the user logs in they can also find out some interesting stats about how they rank compared to other people on the website.

    Customizing

Nabit uses Agriya’s framework which is a tried and tested foundation and runs our other legendary software like Rayzz, Volume, iSocial and Feedy. It has an external Smarty templating system so the design can easily be customized if you know how to use PHP, XHTML and CSS. Agriya will also provide any customization requirements that you might have.

    Hosting Requirements

Nabit is a low resource script and would work on most cPanel shared hosting solutions. However if it starts to get a lot of traffic we recommend upgrading to a VPS. We do not support customers who choose GoDaddy hosting since their servers are incompatible with our scripts. Agriya can recommend several hosting solutions if required.

    Pricing and Demo

At this stage we are interested in working with people who want to use the Yoink clone script as a platform around which to develop their own site. The software is quite new and requires time to mature and grow in to a ready made solution like our other products. If you are interested in using Nabit as a platform to create something new, please let us know in our comments section or by filling out the form on our yoink clone page.
