  1. Pareto principle marketing

Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist who is best known in economics for the concept of the Pareto optimal position. Pareto was one of the first people to analyze economic problems using mathematics. He states that doing 20% of work can generate 80% of the results. In Pareto’s case 20 percent of the people owned 80 percent of the wealth.

The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, describes the common pattern of sales concentration. The concept is fairly simple, 20% of the input creates 80% of the output. For instance, 20 percent of your advertisement creates 80 percent of traffic and 20 percent of traffic is converted into 80% of sales. 20 percent of your staff will provide 80 percent of your production. If you can reliably distinguish the 20% of actions, it will surely produce the disproportionate amount of benefits.

After Pareto developed his formula, many other researchers observed similar phenomena in their own areas of expertise. Quality management expert, Dr. Joseph Juran, recognized a universal phenomenon and he termed as the principle of the “vital few and trivial many” which was similar to the Pareto’s principle. According to him 20 percent of the activities are always responsible for 80 percent of the results.

The 80/20 Rule can be applied in some real life. For example:
    • In general, 80% of football teams’ goals will come from 20% of the players
    • 80% of the revenue comes from 20 % of the customers
    • 80% of the usage comes 20% of the features
    • 80% of the problems come from 20% of the defects
    • 80% of your product comes from 20% of your inventory
    • And so on.

Well. The Pareto principle reminds you to focus on the 20 percent. As, this 20 percent will always produce 80 percent of your results. So focus and work smart on those 20percent and get top most benefits in the marketing field.

  1. Why do we need a sitemap?

Is a site map necessary for a website? Yes of course. If a website has hundreds of pages, it can get rather chaotic in a navigation bar. Apart from this, both human browsers and search engine spiders need an easy access to find all the pages within a site. Therefore a sitemap is very essential. It gives them a simple navigational tool.

Lack of a sitemap may be the reason why your site hasn’t been completely indexed. If you are using many pages, some search engines have a difficulty in indexing them. So a site map makes it easier for a search engine spider to find and index every page on your site. It will surely improve the search engine optimization of your site.

So, what is a site map? Site map is a textually organized model for a website content that allows the users to go to the website to find what they require. It doesn’t need to include all of your web pages but should include all the site structures.

With a little effort, you can create a Sitemap for your site. Here comes some important guidelines for enhancing the sitemap.

Provide a sitemap to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. This assists the visitors who are using a sitemap as a quick and easy means to find the information.

Provide short description about your products and services at the top of your site map page. This can be a nice introduction about your services for someone who has landed on this page directly from a search engine or else where.

Use layout for your sitemap page as it will provide a clear visual structure for your website.

Make sure that your sitemap is updated frequently. As your website grows, you must update your Sitemap. It helps your visitors know that a new content is being added to your website. If you are selling products or offering services, this is one of the greatest ways for the users to know your latest products or services by visiting your Sitemap.

Without a Sitemap, your visitors may even leave your site, going back to the search engine pages, to look for information that may be in your website. So create an effective site map even if you have a website with few pages and thus grab more visitors.

  1. Tips to improve high quality page rank in search engines!

    Peter on July 28th, 2008

Everyone needs to be successful in their business. Nowadays online business is very familiar to everybody. Due to this familiarity, many business people are now ready to market their products and services online. A website plays a vital role for them if a site has a large page rank. A higher page rank means it will be more visible in the search engines and could receive more visitors.

There are many ways to promote a website and increase its page rank. This article will give some key points that you can follow and improve your website ranking in the search engines.

Building back links (a back link is a link pointing to your website from another related website) is the first and foremost way to improve the website page rank because some popular search engines like Google will give more importance to the number of back links for page ranking. You can achieve these back links by joining forums that are somewhat related to your website.

Submit your website to website directories. They are a good way to get a free link to your website. They will allow you to increase your web presence by being listed on other search engines. If you have more links, then you could have more chance to get a high page rank.

Your website should contain valuable information for a visitor so that they will hopefully come back to your site again. For this reason it is a good practice to update your website regularly by adding more informative content.

Trading your links with other website owners by putting their link on your webpage and asking them to put your link on their webpage is one of the fastest ways to improve your website visibility in the search engines.

Creating and publishing an informative article is another way to improve page rank in the search engines. If your article is good enough and you’ve taken all necessary steps to reach out to the right people, your article is bound to get popular and more people are going to be reading it. You need to remember that your article has to be informative, precise and attractive.

Try to write press releases about your products and services, and publish them all over the web; these will reach the global audience and increase your page rank.

  1. Importance of Web Analytics

Web Analytics is one of the important strategies required for any online business. Web analytics help you find the number of visitors to your site, how they found your site, most visited pages, visiting time, and at what page they leave your site.

The major function of the web analytics is to gather web data such as client IP addresses, hit date and time, bytes transferred, download time, target Page, server IP address, cookies data etc. Using the gathered data, the visitor’s behavior, potential customer requirement and effectiveness of the advertisement on the site are judged. The site design can be enhanced based on the judgment.

Now you may think how the web analytics can be used. You can get your own web analytic software from the market to analyze your site. Next arises the question of choosing the web analytic software.

Choose web analytic software based on the following factors:

    • Data required to be gathered from the site.
    • Choose carefully the quality suppliers who offer lists of products that can be customized to clients’ specific business needs.
    • If you have enough staff to handle the analysis data, you can go for the web analytic software that offers only the required data of the site.  If you are short of analysis resources, choose the software that is easier to use and provide analysis reports on the gathered data.
    • Check the vendor track record of the software, to know the software reliability, support and service offered by them.
    • The software should be simple so that it can be implemented easily and should require minimal start-up training for easier usage.

Web analytic software helps marketing professionals, web masters, and ISPs make informed decisions about their web sites. It also helps increase customer rate, improve customer satisfaction, increase production, make effective data-driven decisions, enhance marketing strategies and achieve targets.

  1. Open Source alternative for Google Analytics

Most webmasters now recognize that Analytics is one of the best free web stats programs available. However, with this data, you are telling Google everything they need to know about your website, including time spent on the site, page views, bounce rate…everything.

There has long been a wonder about whether Google tracks users who click on their organic search results. Do they track click through rates for different sites? Do they log when a user hits a backbutton? Do they use some area 51 hidden frame display technology to monitor the facial reaction of the user as they open up the site?

Well, they may do, but do they really need to do it when you are giving them all the information they need to assess your site via Google Analytics?

If this disturbs you that Google knows too much about your site then it may be time to check out Piwik.

Piwik has worked on this Google analytics proprietary technology and has come up with an open source alternative for that.

This Piwik open source product is developer friendly with access to the source files as well and claiming the advantages of it’s open source product as

    • Open API
    • Plug in architecture
    • Data abstraction layer
    • Customizable dashboard

  1. Congratulations to WordPress

    Peter on April 4th, 2008

wp logoJust wanted to post a quick note of (admittedly belated) congratulations to the guys over at WordPress.org on releasing the latest 2.5 version of their software.

The newest version is another step forward to what is arguably the worlds best (not to mention favourite) blogging platform – beating other open source and commercial products alike.

The latest version has way too many new features to mention, so we won’t, we’ll let the guys over at wordpress do that here:

    http://wordpress.org/development/2008/03/wordpress-25-brecker/

My personal appreciation for WordPress started just over a year ago in January 2007 when I decided to switch my personal blog from Drupal to WP. The ease and simplicity was a step ahead of everything else I’ve used and I’m glad to say that after upgrading this blog they have continued that tradition.

But WordPress isn’t just a great blogging tool, over the years it has also evolved in to what could be considered quite a robust content management system, and infact we are modifying WP right now to power our network of sites – I’ll tell you right now, the programmers wanted to use Drupal, but I stuck to my guns and they conceded that WP would be able to do the job :)

If you are thinking of using or already use WordPress for your blogging solution, I strongly suggest you check out this WordPress SEO Whitepaper which contains loads of tips, tricks and plugin suggestions to get the most out of your blog.

Finally, if you are in the market for some custom WordPress templates or custom plugins, then shoot us a mail to info@agriya.com and tell us what you have on your mind. We love WordPress at Agriya, and we’re keen to help you get the best out of it!

  1. Picking Hot Niches

    Peter on April 3rd, 2008

There’s a handy little tool provided by Google that seems to have been overlooked by many SEO’s and webmasters in general. The tool is called Google Trends and it allows you to find out the search trend of the keyword phrases you might want to be optimizing for.

Let me first start by saying Google Trends is not a keyword search volume tool. It shows you the general trend, and is relative only to that search phrase.

I have found it particularly useful when researching niches, for example, say you wanted to use Rayzz to start your own video sharing site in the niche of Base Jumping (hey, there’s a lot of crazy people out there), I can use Google Trends to find out if it’s a growing niche based on searches.

    base jumping trends

Based on the image above, we can see that the overall trend for base jumping seems to be up, great news if we were to start a new site on base jumping.

Some of the limitations of the tool is that it won’t report on every keyword if there is not enough data. So you can probably forget about using most of your long tail words in this tool.

What I find the tool useful for is to search for the higher level or more generic keywords and see what the overall trend is for the niche in general. If it’s a rising trend, then it’s a good sign it’s a growing industry.

Let’s say you were looking at Orbit Social Networking Software, you are wondering if social networking is a growing industry. We head over to Google Trends and do a search…

    social networking search trend

Awesome! The search has near exponential growth, social networking is definitely taking off. And look at the number of news reports, social networking is a hot topic right now, so it’s definitely time to hop on that band wagon :)

  1. Google Buys Double Click

    Peter on April 1st, 2008

It’s official, Google is showing off the latest offspring to be welcomed in to the family; online advertising firm, DoubleClick. Google paid $3.1 billion in cash for the company – a drop in the ocean of the reported $12 bn cash reserves the company holds.

The purchase was originally announced nearly a year ago, but legal wrangling and hoop jumping with the FTC to prove the purchase was good for the online advertising industry, and it’s only just been give the right.

To be honest, I don’t see how when the biggest online advertising company purchases another large online advertising company it’s good for competition and not a monopolization of an industry.

One of the great ironies of the acquisition is that by purchasing DoubleClick, they are also acquiring a company called Performics which is (wait for it) a search engine optimization and artificial link building company! Everything that Google stands against.

It is yet to be seen what Google will do with Performics, but it’s not hard to see that a certain conflict of interests is raised.

Once again, I’m surprised the FTC has allowed the acquisition to go ahead based on the monopolization of the online advertising industry and the conflict of interests that is raised from the subsequent acquiring of Performics.

I don’t think it’s going to be long before some serious anti-trust lawsuits are filed against America’s darling web company.
