  1. CSSilize Introduces Mobile Website App Conversion and Creation

    Peter on August 11th, 2011

Mobile technology is now completely mainstream and while 3 years ago you could build a small screen optimized version of your site but unfortunately it’s not that simple any more – particularly if you want to stay ahead of the competition.

With the deluge of new smartphones hitting the market and the range of features that they all incorporate, creating a single mobile version of your site just won’t cut it if you want to attract and retain visitors using their mobile phones to access your site.

    mobile website app conversion

The first thing you need to consider is touch-phones like many Android based phones and non-touch phones like the Blackberry. Since the touch-phone user can easily touch anywhere on the screen the navigation and links should feature big, bold links. By contrast, a Blackberry user usually has to rely on a keypad or trackerball to navigate around the page so the order of the links and content becomes very important.

Another option to consider is a native app, an application built specifically for a smartphone that can take advantage of all the nifty hardware that is built in to modern day phones like accelerometers, GPS devices and cameras and can add a whole new dimension and way for the user to interact with your website.

Until now, developing a mobile website for all these different kinds of devices was something of a headache, not to mention a very expensive process but that has all changed thanks to the revolutionary new service now offered by CSSilize.

The site that was the first PSD slicing service to offer a fully featured project management system where you could see your slicing project take shape in real time with immediate feedback given to the developers has now expanded its services to offer comprehensive mobile website development and mobile website conversion.

Here’s how the new services break down

    Native Apps

These are actual applications that your users can download and install on to their smartphone from your website or more commonly from the various app stores available. Your website will be optimized for a native app experience, taking advantage of built in hardware where available.

CSSilize utilizes the PhoneGap framework technology which enables us to rapidly build and deploy your app much faster across a range of smartphone platforms like iPhone, Android and Symbian. PhoneGap is an open source framework which uses HTML5 and Javascript to easily create cross-platform compatible apps, which means you save a tonne of money by not having to develop a Blackberry app, an Android app and an iPhone app.

If you order a native app you can let us know what additional features you want to add such as Contacts, picture viewer or Geolocation. The full source code will be delivered to you upon project completion and instructions will be provided on how to get your app approved by the various app stores or CSSilize will even handle the submission process for you for an additional fee.

Note: This service creates a native app version of your existing website, it doesn’t create a brand new app to your requirements. If you need mobile application development, please get in touch with us.

Suitable For: iPhones, Android Phones, Nokia Phones, Windows Mobile Phones and Palm Phones

    Touch Mobile Web App Sites

Touch Apps are mobile versions of your website but are optimized for the various touchscreen mobile phones. CSSilize will take your existing website or mobile site, redesign it to be touch friendly with bigger buttons and simple navigation and convert it in to a touch-friendly mobile site.

Your touch friendly mobile website will look different to your normal site but still retain the functionality. It will work on any touch screen mobile phone like the iPhone or Android.

Suitable For: Any touch based mobile phone with Internet access

    Regular Mobile Sites

These mobile sites are designed for phones which don’t have touch screens and the users have to navigate via a 4 direction control pad or a tracking ball like on the Blackberry. The layout is tailored to the smaller screen with the content presented in a linear manner to allow easy navigation given the movement restrictions.

Suitable For: Any mobile phone with Internet access

  1. Android and iPhone Applications Launched For GroupDeal

    Peter on August 9th, 2011

Ever since it was launched, GroupDeal supported a mobile version of the website. Simply point your mobile to m.yourdomain.com and GroupDeal detected the mobile device being used and served up a mobile optimized version of the website. That’s worked great for many of our customers and we’ve received some good feedback on it but we always wanted to go one step further and create native apps that are built specifically for the iPhone and Android devices.

We’re pleased to announce that you can now buy the iPhone and Android GroupDeal apps from our customers area and then let your members download and install it for your site. Each app requires a little bit of customization to make it unique to your site but don’t worry we’ve got full documentation on how to do this along with step by step screenshots.

Once you app is configured, you can let people download it, either directly from your website or from the official app stores (subject to it being approved, of course!), then they can check out the deals you’ve got on offer and purchase deals in a layout that is far better optimized for the individual mobile devices.

Just check out the screenshots below, on the left you’ve got the iPhone screenshot and on the right is the corresponding Android screenshot.

Both apps are integrated with Google Maps to display the deals on a map

Unfortunately it’s not very easy to provide live demos of the applications because they need to be downloaded and installed, however we are trying to work something out. In the meantime you can submit an enquiry or shoot an email to your assigned sales rep or CRM and they’ll help you out with all the details and explain the process of buying, setting up and submitting the apps to the marketplaces.

  1. Channel Videos Now Work On The iPhone!

    Peter on September 28th, 2010

Even in India we haven’t failed to notice just how popular the iPhone and iPad are and how the usage is exploding like never before. However the big draw back for all our customers is that up until now we’ve only presented videos in a state of the art FLV Player. Now we are sure you are aware but this has one major disadvantage and drawback: People using Apple products can’t view the videos on your website :(

Responding to an overwhelming demand from our customers, we assigned our best techno-nerds (they like to be called web developers) to figure out how to let our customers have their cake and eat it too. Or in other words, how can people using a browser take advantage of all the features in the FLV player and people using the iPhone and iPad still be able to view the videos.

The result is a brand new module for Channel called: Channel Mobile

When you install this module it does three things:

    1. Converts all uploaded videos to QuickTime – Apple’s preferred video playback method
    2. Redirects all iPhone and iPad (as well as other mobile users) to a special mobile optimized website
    3. Installs a new theme that is optimized for portable devices like the iPhone

To get the module working you simply have to upload the files and follow the onscreen installation instructions and then you’ll have a fully optimized mobile version of your site that iPhone and iPad users can access and watch videos. All the usual functions are available too, so your users can search, comment, rate, login and share videos just like they would if they were accessing the site through a computer browser.

Check out some of the screenshots below to see how your site will look:

Each page has been designed specifically to fit on the small screen and to be as clean as possible. It’s 100% compatible with all types of touch screen phones and tablets so you will be able to open your site to a whole new market.

If you are wondering what it looks like in real life (and just to prove that we have been testing the site on real Apple products!) have a look at the photos below which show a few screens from our new Channel Mobile module.

Check it out, see how it works (although note that the video loading might be a bit slow due to the huge amount of traffic we have on our demo servers).

If you are using your regular computer browser then you will see the normal Channel website.

    How To Order

If you want to get up and running with this module right away you can go ahead and place an order here. It costs $47 and you’ll get instant download once your order has been approved. Buy Channel Mobile now.

If you’ve got any questions about this module please use our Live Chat buttons, contact form or post a comment below (although comments are moderated and may take up to 24 hours to appear).

    Not Just For Channel

We’ll be coming out with Mobile modules for the rest of our products over the coming weeks, but if you want to optimize the user experience for your own website then get in touch with us today and let us show you how we can create a fantastic mobile version of your existing website.

  1. iPad Application Development

    Peter on March 30th, 2010

The iPad is the latest “wow” gadget from Apple and like the iPod and iPhone before it, it’s likely to kick-start an entirely new market which bridges the gap between smartphones and netbooks. The iPad runs a similar operating system to the iPhone but since it is bigger and more powerful it can run larger and more resource intensive applications (or apps, to use the industry buzz word). You can essentially think of it as an overgrown iPhone.

The iPad has the same multi-touch and accelerometer technology as the iPhone and so many of the application functionality designed for the iPhone can be used in the iPad. Given that Agriya already has experience in iPhone Application Development, we have begun offering iPad Application Development and welcome any enquiries or questions about this new service.

Even though the iPad has recently launched and has almost created a new market by itself, analysts are expecting anywhere between 2 million and 4 million units to be sold in 2010 and since the iPad can handle much more powerful and robust applications, the price tag for the apps can be increased significantly.

Although any iPhone applications will work on the iPad since they share the same iPhone SDK, they can be shown at the original size (which will look small on the iPad) or full screen which will distort the graphics. The best option, and one that many companies are choosing, is to port iPhone apps to the iPad. Agriya can also help with iPhone to iPad ports.

So if you are looking for iPad Apps Development, get in touch with Agriya, we’ve got the experience and expertise to transform your idea in to a fully working iPad app.

  1. Virus Attacks that Couldn’t Happen without your Cooperation

    sujata on March 4th, 2010

Attacking computer networks these days, or installing a virus in a fortress of security at a major corporation involves doing more than making clever coding and performing clever digital confidence tricks on company employees to beguile them into clicking on something. A recent survey of hundreds of government agencies and corporations in the US found that nearly three-quarters of all computers in them had infections of one kind or another. These are organizations that spend billions of dollars in computer security every year. What ways do the hackers have of getting past such impregnable defenses?

Usually, it could be something really low-tech, but very clever. One way that has been reported recently, has been this: a hacker designs for good virus, loads it on a pen drive, and silk screens the company logo on the face of the drive. He then leaves it somewhere conspicuous, on the company’s premises, as in the parking lot or an ATM. The hacker hopes that a company employee will discover it, plug it into his company laptop to find out who it belongs to, and by doing this, will activate a virus inside that will steal all the company passwords stored on the laptop. It will then phone home, with its cache of stolen passwords. Most firewalls and other defenses do not count on having a company employee personally bring something in like this.

The Google attacks in China were a twist on the traditional phishing tactic. They were called spear-phishing attacks. They send counterfeit e-mails to people, taking the trouble to design the e-mails with official-looking emblems and stationery, but they aim for a specific person in the organization, and they mention a well-known friend in the from-address section too. It is all about getting past an employee, and having him invite the virus inside by his own actions. They don’t just need anti virus software anymore. They need anti-gullibility behavioral training for their employees.

Cell phones are not such targets for now with hackers so far, because there are so many models and so many different operating systems. But with a very popular model like the iPhone, things could start happening, that would turn the smart phone into a surveillance device that records pictures and audio. They can even tap into an iPhone, to learn exactly where the owner is, with GPS.

In a high-tech world, low-tech is often the way infiltrations take place these days.Often, we are just looking at hoof prints and thinking exotic zebras, when we should be thinking donkeys. We need to think low-tech once again today.

  1. Music Exploring on Facebook and Twitter

    sujata on November 5th, 2009

The problem of being haunted by a tune must be a really bothersome one for people, judging by the number of applications there are out there that will help ease your mind in the matter. Midomi is one of the star performers in this area; this search engine is so powerful that it can pick up on the tune you have in mind if you will just sing it over into your computer. All you need is a modicum of singing skill and nothing stops you from placing that bothersome tune. Midomi happens to be a self-refining algorithm too. When enough people sing in for a particular song, the algorithm learns better and better.

Midomi and the competing product Shazam, both work on the iPhone and other smartphones too. Perhaps the best part of Midomi is the way it can tie in with the Twitter and Facebook experience. There is a Facebook app that Midomi has that can help you share all your musical discoveries in this way with your friends on the network. Once you have that song nailed, the program will also let you go over to your favorite YouTube clone site to watch a video or take you to an online music store to buy it.

In collaboration with LyricsFly and IMDB, a new service called ScreenTunes helps you search for movie soundtracks too. The Midomi concept can certainly help push a popular segment in social networking, one that is devoted to obscure music in a shared experience of discovering it. Perhaps the best part of these applications is hearing how they were created by enterprising young people, some barely out of school.
